The news broke in last week in the Qt community: Qt SDK, in whole, has been ported to Android.

Was it Nokia? No, it wasn’t

Maybe Google? Not either

It’s been a Romanian developer called Bogdan Vatra. In his spare time.

I interviewed Bogdan for Behind KDE last week and today the interview went live. Want to know more? Start reading!

Now we only need Android-phone owners to start porting KDE libraries, applications and all the eyecandy to Android. Sadly, I do not own an Android device ๐Ÿ™

7 Thoughts on “Qt on Android developer interviewed

  1. Last week? We know about the android-lighthouse much longer…

  2. He announced a new installation-process or something like that and he got some attention because of the Nokia-news. However, a great project.

  3. @TheUser:

Last Monday, Bogdan announced the port of the Qt SDK to Android. Of course we have known about porting efforts but there had been no announcements, nothing you could call a “baseline” to do some QA work on.

The interview was made last week (on Wednesday, IIRC).

Also, he did not just port Qt, he also integrated the Android emulator with Qt SDK and he created an automated deployment tool on both sides (to package the application -integrated in Qt Creator-, and to install Qt on the Android device -Ministro- ). The fact that you do not need to package Qt with your application, and that you do not need to manually create packages for your application, is what makes his work even more impressive.

  4. It’s not as easy as you think ๐Ÿ™‚

I don’t think KDE would run smoothly on top of android..

I’m a damn purist and I don’t like mixing libraries EVER..
But in this case it’s simply not feasible given the android mid-phones hardware.
My android phone has something like 256MB in ram and is not that fast alone, I don’t want extra stuff loaded.

Maybe with phones with 512-1024MB it may be useful

I personally prefer to choose between a java android phone and a qt one.

And I’d really like to see a commercial phone based on kde mobile (which is pretty cool right now)

  5. Maybe not kdelibs but qt works on java and so it’s just the same as local apps AFAIK, but it would be hard to distribute and sell these apps, I don’t se joe sixpack downloading whole qt for a calculator app.

  6. Luckily, with Android x86, any Intel computer can be an “Android device” ๐Ÿ˜‰

  7. @damian
joe sixpack does not care, well, another status-bar, takes a bit longer than usual, next day he has forgotten the Qt installation.
